resumes normal operations this morning after a collision with a small boat yesterday. it left two boaters hospitalized. known on the ferry was injured. john alston has the details from marijuana general hospital. >> the damage to the 22-foot speedboat shows the force of the impact. a windshield shattered, a front side of the boat caved in. as the coast guard towed the damaged craft to tiburon, there was recorded video of the men work to go save the two men on the boat. >> the first guy was really not moving. they were doing cpr for a long time. >> the rescue either involved a surgeon and nurse who were on the ferry and jumped on the victim's boat to help.

the collision occurred as the ferry was on its way from sausalito to san francisco. it happened south of tiburon in the raccoon strait. none of the people on the ferry was hurt. >> yeah, we could feel it. the ferry didn't move that much but you could feel it and you heard it. we came closer, we saw two people lying on the boat. >> the coast guard said the bay was calm with winds at 15 to 20 knots. they said the smaller boat was reported to be traveling at a high rate of speed when it hit the ferry. the accident caused a commotion on the waterfront as the coast guard and medical chopperslanned and took off, providing a real life drama on an ideal lick saturday afternoon. >> you could tell they were doing cpr on one guy and they continued to do cpr. didn't look too good for him.

the other guy they loaded him up and he had some blood on his face. >> the coast guard has been interviewing witnesses. the ferry captain and five deck hands have been drug tested and placed on administrative leave, with i is routine in these types of accidents. the ferry was pulled out of service yesterday but regular ferry service should resume today. abc7 news. this morning a 72-year-old woman is not expected to recover from injuries received when she was hit by a muni bus in daly city. the accident happened about 4:30 yesterday afternoon. it involved the 1846 avenue bus. woman hit by the bus while in the crosswalk. family members were telling abc news the woman's injuries are very serious. they have signed a "do not resuscitate" form. muni driver will undergo standard drug and alcohol testing. >> in oakland police are investigating a fatal shooting that happened near a bart station. sky 7hd was overhead as police

responded to reports of gunfire on peralta near 8th street yesterday evening. it's close to the bart station. officers found a man with a gunshot wound to the head. homicide investigators blocked off access to the intersection right after the shooting. bart service was not affected. a follow lane on the richmond-san rafael bridge will stay closed for most of today. it's part of the ongoing installation of a new automated toll collection system. it's expect today reopen in time for tomorrow morning's holiday commute. the current toll system is 15 years old and officials say it needs to be replaced. currently there are no plans to remove all the toll-takers from from the state run bridge. >> about 5,000 people are expected to converge in san francisco today demanding a stop to the proposed oil pipeline. the keystone xl tar sands pipeline would extend from alberta, canada to the u.s. gulf

coast. it's one of several multi-billion dollars pipeline projects in the works. it would carry oil from the landlocked tar sands oil field which environmental groups say is a big step in the wrong direction. their so-called forward on climate rally will involve protesters surrounding the u.s. state department's san francisco office of the office at state market street. it will start at 1:00 this afternoon. there will also be speeches from 2:30 until 3:00. happening in just a few hours, runners will take over parts of san francisco's financial district. it's an annual lunar new year celebration. the chinatown new year run starts at 8:00 this morning at grant and sacramento streets. the course winds its way through the embarcadero back up to clay street. the run will be followed by a festival at portsmouth square. be advised several streets will have lane closers and some muni lines will also be affected.

>> a u.c. berkeley student is featured in a nationally released video aimed for supporting citizenship for young immigrants. they referred to as the dreamers. the education reporter lyanne melendez explains who is behind this campaign. >> this is terrence. he is getting a degree in mathematics and applied statistics at u.c. berkeley. >> it wasn't hard to find terrence parks on the ninth floor of evans hall. we wanted to know why he wanted to speak out. >> i thought maybe it was the right moment for me to contribute something to the movement. >> the movement is called "the dream is now."

it focuses on urging congress to pass the dream act which would provide permanent residency to young people like terrence who were brought to this country by an immigrant parent. he was born in south korea. the video released nationwide was directed by david of "inconvenient truth and waiting for superman." terrence argues that instead of the government spending money to deport people, someone like him with a college degree would poor more money into the economy. >> the dream act passes, dreamers will earn $148 billion by 2030. so if they are going to earn that much money, that means they are going to spend this much money. >> terrence claims if the dream act doesn't pass, even with a math degree he won't be able to find a good-paying job. >> find a job where someone would pay me under the table supermarkets, laundry, things like that. >> rick says the dream act would encourage more people to cross the border.

22-foot speedboat shows the force of the impact. a windshield shattered the side of the boat caved in. the collision happened as the golden gate ferry ms san francisco was on its way to sausalito back to the city. the coast guard said the bay was calm. a spokesperson for the golden gate transportation district said the smaller boat was reportedly to be traveling at a high rate of speed when it hit the ferry. none of the 500 people on the ferry were hurt. the accident, as you may imagine, caused a commotion on the tiburon waterfront at coast guard and medical choppers landed and took off. here's what one person told abc7 news. >> they were doing cpr on one guy. they continued to do cpr. didn't look too good for him. the other guy they brought up in a gurney and loaded him up. he had blood on his face. >> the rescue effort involved emts from the coast guard and the fire department as well as a surgeon and nurse who happened to be on the ferry. they jumped on board the

victim's boat to help. the coast guard interviewed witnesses throughout the night to determine exactly what happened. the ferry captain and the five deck hands were placed on administrative leave. we should mention that that is customary in these types of accidents. reporting live from mare general hospital, kira klapper, abc7 news. >> we wish both of these people a speedy recovery. thank you very much, career are you raw. in los angeles a controversial rally was held this weekend in support of christopher dorner. as you know, dorner died last week, possibly from a self-inflicted gunshot wound during a shootout with police. he is suspected of killing four people after issuing a manifesto claiming he was wrongly fired from the lapd. protesters are not agreeing with his actions but feel more attention should be focused on the police force itself and on the process that led to dorner's dismissal. later today a sad chapter in american history will be commemorated. tuesday marks the 71st

anniversary of the internment of japanese americans during world war ii. an event will be held in japan town to mark the occasion. the annual event at the theater will feature words and memories from internment cam survivors. it begins at 2:00 this afternoon. organizers have dedicated this year's commemoration to the late hawaii senator daniel inoway. this is new video showing pope benedict tickets and the tens of thousands who gathered this morning at st. peter's square to hear pope benedict conduct sunday morning mass. it's one of the last before he steps down. the vatican said the meeting of senior church officials to select a new pope, a process known as the conclave, may again -- begin sooner than expected. church rules says a concave must begin 15 to 20 days after the seat becomes vacant

after a period of mourning, but this time there's no need to mourn because pope benedict is alive. he decided to resign. speeding up the process could potentially give the church a new pope for holy week, the week before easter. the family of olympic runner oscar pistorius said he's overcome with grief after fatally shooting his girlfriend. the man, known as the blade runner is charged with the premeditated murder of her. that was en valentine's day. a reality show aired last night in south africa. the family talked to the media. >> disgust. as you can imagine, he's also numb with shock and grief, in total pain. >> attorneys for pistorius are expected to argue he fired at his girlfriend because he thought she was an intruder. prosecutors say the evidence will show that pistorius and his

girlfriend argued and she locked herself in a bathroom where she was shot four times through the door. an idaho man faces a federal charge after accusations he used a racial slur and slapped a baby who was trying on an airplane. it happened on a delta flight from minneapolis to atlanta. the 19-year-old's mom was sitting next to this man of idaho. she said he reeked of alcohol and continued to drink during the flight. as the plane was about to land her little boy got fidgety. he used a racial slur about the child as he told the boy's mother to shut him up but it didn't end there. >> i could not believe that he would say something like that. and to a baby or about a baby. and then to hit him was just -- i felt like i was in another world. i was shaking. she said other passengers came to her aid and she was able to move to another seat. both parents say they hope he is convicted and punished on the assault charge.

work is underway on the final set of improvements to highway 4 in east contra costa county. it's an area plagued with massive traffic backups. here's abc7 news transportation reporter heather ishimaru. >> this stretch of dirt will one day have tracks on it carrying bart passengers. between pittsburgh and antioch. completion of the line from pittsburgh bay point ten miles east to hillcrest in antioch is still four years away, but it's a beginning we are celebrating. east contra costa residents have been helping to pay for bart with nothing to show for it

since it was first envisioned in 1958. that's truly a lifetime of waiting. wade harper was born in 1964. >> this means an improved quality of life for our area. it means economic development. it means police and fire getting there safer and expeditiously to save lives. >> the people out here have been paying for a long time. this is long overdue, long related rail extension. >> this bart video shows at the new platform passengers will transfer between bart trains and the smaller e-bart train. no fair gates or barrier, just a 28-foot walk. the lighter e-bart costs 60% less than regular bart trains. >> it is really kind of remarkable. there's been a lot of conversation, a lot of quarreling, but i think we are on our way to opening an extension that really makes sense for the region. >> e-bart construction will really take off after 2015 when work on the final expansion project along highway 4 will be completed.
